Putting an idea into your own words is one of the first real comprehension skills a young reader builds, and the In My Own Words Worksheet gives second graders a simple, friendly way to practice it. When a child reads a sentence and then says it a different way, they have to slow down, picture what is happening, and choose words that carry the same meaning. That is paraphrasing, and it is the foundation of retelling, summarizing, and answering questions about a text. This in my own words worksheet keeps the reading load light so all of the thinking goes into the restating.
This reading response worksheet gives students three short sentences, each in its own rounded box with two wide writing lines underneath. Students read the sentence, think about what it really means, and then write the same idea using different words. The sentences use vivid everyday language such as worn out, grinned, and bent the tall grass, so there is always a clear picture to describe and a natural word to swap. Use it as morning work, as a quick check after a read aloud, or as a warm up before a longer retelling activity. A complete answer key with a sample response for every sentence is included on the second page.
