How to teach Speaking and Listening
Using this Let’s Chat Discussion Starter Activity, students summarize the points a speaker makes and explains how each claim is supported by reasons and evidence through discussion starter cards.
Discussions are an important opportunity for our students to practice speaking and listening skills. However, discussions are challenging for many of our students. This activity will help guide your students to ask the right questions and aid in the discussion. Being able to discuss the text and summarizing the points a speaker makes can also demonstrate reading comprehension skills.
Students read the same fiction or nonfiction text. Next, they use the discussion starters and discussion guide bookmarks to summarize points made by speakers to discuss the text.

If you are using this activity, your students are probably learning about summarization.
Use this Class Critics Summarizing Activity as an additional resource for your students.
Introduce the activity by reading a short passage and asking students to summarize the text, modeling how to do so with complete sentences like those on the Discussion Guide Bookmarks. Then, ask two students to volunteer to practice in a discussion about the text. Next, partner your students up and pass out the discussion starters and discussion guide bookmarks. Move around the room and listen as students engage in conversation, ensuring that each student is getting a chance to speak. Finally, ask students in a whole group to share what they learned from this activity.
