About this resource
Description
Good speakers take turns, and good listeners show they heard. This Let’s Talk classroom speaking activity gives kindergarten through 3rd grade students a simple job in a small group, so every child talks, listens and responds about one topic at a time. Each role comes with a sentence starter, which helps shy speakers know exactly what to say.
To use the Let’s Talk classroom speaking activity, make a group of four to six children and hand each child a role card: Starter, Asker, Repeater, Adder, Cheerer or Checker. The Starter picks a picture topic card, such as Rainy Days or My Pet, and everyone takes a turn using the starter on their card. Swap roles and choose a new topic, then finish with the self-check page.
What’s Included
- Colorful cover page and How to Use page with steps
- 6 role cards with sentence starters
- 6 picture topic cards
- Group self-check page
- Kindergarten practice worksheet: circle Yes or No for good group talk
- Card list key and practice answer key
3 Reasons This Activity Helps Kids
First, a clear job gives every child a reason to listen, not just a turn to talk. Second, sentence starters model polite, complete sentences that children can reuse in class discussions. Third, the self-check page helps students think about how they took part, which builds the habits of a good group member.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Use a picture book you just read as the topic, or let older students write a new topic card. Post the role cards during whole-class talks as reminders. At home, take turns as the Asker and the Repeater at the dinner table. This kindergarten speaking and listening activity also works well in centers or morning meeting.
