About this resource
Description
Big H, little h and the H in hat all come together in the Letter H Game, a sunny helicopter rescue for preschool kids. Letters and pictures are floating on swim rings in a tropical lagoon, and they need a hero. Sunny flies the yellow helicopter, and kids can drag it back and forth or tap a choice to fly right over it. When a child taps a big H, the rope drops down, the hook grabs it, and up it comes into the helicopter, then it rides to the rescue row on the sand. Playing the letter h game again and again helps little learners recognize the big H and the little h, tell h apart from look-alike letters like n and m, and hear that hat, house, horse, hen, heart and hippo all start with H.
In this letter h phonics game, Sunny cheers kids on through three rounds. First they rescue the big H among letters like U, N and K, with the tip that big H has two tall lines, with a bridge across the middle. Then they rescue the little h among look-alikes like n, m and r, with the tip that little h has a tall line and one little hump. Last, they rescue the pictures that start with H and skip the fish, the sun and the apple. The letters and pictures a child mixed up come back for one more try. Sunny reads every direction out loud, names each answer (“Hat! Hat starts with H.”) and gives a kind hint after a wrong tap. Play it in your browser on a phone, tablet, Chromebook or computer.
What’s Included
- Online game that plays in any browser on desktop, tablet and phone
- Included with every Have Fun Teaching membership
- 3 rounds: Big H, Little h, then H Pictures
- Voice directions, helicopter and splash sound effects and a star score at the end
Here are three reasons this letter h game helps kids learn. First, the wrong choices are the real mix-ups young children make, like n for h and U for H, so kids practice exactly what trips them up. Second, Sunny names the letter or the word after every right answer and uses the same words teachers use, like big H, little h and starts with H, so the lesson sounds the same at home and at school. Third, the helicopter you can steer, the dropping rope, the splashes, the golden swim ring surprise, streak celebrations and the stars at the end keep kids smiling and asking to play again.
Teachers and parents can keep the H fun going after the game. Go on an H hunt and find a hat, a hand and a heart. Stand tall with your arms out to make a big H together. Hop around the room and say an H word with every hop. Play pretend helicopter and fly to rescue a stuffed animal that starts with H, like a horse or a hippo.
