About this resource
Description
Big K, little k and the K in kangaroo all come together in the Letter K Game, an outback adventure for preschool kids. Abby explores the red-earth outback with its gum trees and kangaroos. First she opens the treasure chests in Gum Tree Gully, then she brings kites to the koalas at Koala Creek, then she climbs Red Rock Hill to get the kites back from Bomzy. Children tap a stop, Abby walks over, she says what to do, and a card asks them to find the letter K. Every right answer does the job: a chest pops open and its keys fly into Abby’s backpack, a kite sails over to a waiting koala. Some stops also give a reward for Abby’s backpack, like an energy boost, a gold compass or a gold star, and outback friends like a kangaroo, a wombat and a platypus make their own sounds and do something silly when kids tap them. Playing the letter k game again and again helps little learners recognize the big K and the little k, tell K apart from look-alike letters like X, R and h, and hear that kangaroo, koala, kite and key all start with K.
In this letter k phonics game, Abby cheers kids on through three parts of the outback. In Gum Tree Gully they find the big K among letters like X, Y and R, with the tip that big K has a tall line and two lines that kick out. At Koala Creek they find the little k among h, x and l, with the tip that little k has a tall line and a little kick in the middle. Then Bomzy grabs the kites, and on Red Rock Hill kids find big K, little k and pictures that start with K, like kangaroo, koala, kite and key, while skipping the sun, the fish and the ball. The letters a child mixed up earlier come back for one more try. A wrong answer costs one of five hearts, never a reward, and Abby gives a kind hint. She reads every direction out loud and names each answer (“Kite! Kite starts with the letter K.”). Play it in your browser on a phone, tablet, Chromebook or computer.

Here are three reasons this letter k game helps kids learn. First, every choice sits next to letters and pictures that look or sound different in one clear way, like X beside K, h beside k and sun beside kite, so kids learn to spot exactly what makes a K a K. Second, Abby names the letter or the word after every right answer and uses the same words teachers use, like big K, little k and starts with the letter K, so the lesson sounds the same at home and at school. Third, the rewards, the silly outback animals, the silly Bomzy, streak celebrations and the stars at the end keep kids smiling and asking to play again.
Teachers and parents can keep the K fun going after the game. Make a paper kite with a big K and a little k on it and fly it around the room. Hop like a kangaroo and name things that start with K. Hunt for a key at home and say key, K, key together. Write a big K together: a tall line down, then kick in and kick out.
