About this resource
Description
Big P, little p and the P in pig all come together in the Letter P Game, a cheerful puzzle game for preschool kids. Doodles has set up his craft table, and chunky wooden puzzle pieces are waiting to be fit into the puzzle tray. Each piece shows a letter or a picture. When a child taps the piece with the big P, it lifts off the table, flies over and snaps right into the puzzle with a click and a burst of sparkles. Kids can also drag a piece onto the tray all by themselves. Playing the letter p game again and again helps little learners recognize the big P and the little p, tell p apart from look-alike letters like b and d, and hear that pig, pizza, pumpkin, penguin, pear and pencil all start with P.
In this letter p phonics game, Doodles cheers kids on through three rounds. First they fit the big P among letters like B, D and F, with the tip that big P has a tall line and one bump at the top. Then they fit the little p among look-alikes like b, d and n, with the tip that little p drops down low, with a bump at the top. Last, they fit the pictures that start with P and skip the ball, the sun and the cat. The letters and pictures a child mixed up come back for one more try. Doodles reads every direction out loud, names each answer (“Pig! Pig starts with P.”) and gives a kind hint after a wrong tap. Play it in your browser on a phone, tablet, Chromebook or computer.
What’s Included
- Online game that plays in any browser on desktop, tablet and phone
- Included with every Have Fun Teaching membership
- 3 rounds: Big P, Little p, then P Pictures
- Voice directions, wooden puzzle snap sound effects and a star score at the end
Here are three reasons this letter p game helps kids learn. First, the wrong choices are the real mix-ups young children make, like b and d for p and B for P, so kids practice exactly what trips them up. Second, Doodles names the letter or the word after every right answer and uses the same words teachers use, like big P, little p and starts with P, so the lesson sounds the same at home and at school. Third, the snapping puzzle pieces, the glitter shower, the golden puzzle piece surprise, streak celebrations and the stars at the end keep kids smiling and asking to play again.
Teachers and parents can keep the P fun going after the game. Go on a P hunt and find a pencil, a pillow and a pan. Pop like popcorn and say a P word with every pop. Make a big P with a pipe cleaner and a pom-pom. Do a real puzzle together and say “P is for puzzle” each time a piece fits.
