Long vowels are the vowel sounds that say their own name, and learning to hear them is one of the biggest steps a young reader takes. This Long Vowels Filling in the Blanks Worksheet gives first graders focused practice with the silent-e pattern, where a final e quietly changes a short vowel into a long one. Words like cake, kite, mule, and rose all follow the same rule, and once children notice it, dozens of new words open up to them. Reading a word in a real sentence, rather than on a flashcard, is what makes the pattern stick.
This 1st grade long vowels worksheet works in two short parts. In Part A, students read four simple sentences and write the word from the word box that finishes each one.
