The middle sound of a word is the vowel a child hears between the first and last sounds, and hearing it is one of the hardest steps in early reading. Short i and short u are especially easy to mix up because the mouth barely moves between them. This middle sounds i or u worksheet slows that moment down: children say a picture name out loud, stretch it, and decide whether the sound in the middle is /i/ as in pig or /u/ as in bus. Pulling a word apart this way is called segmenting, and it is the skill that turns guessing into real decoding.
