Description
Reading and spelling short words begins with hearing the three sounds hiding inside them. In a word like cat, a child has to catch the beginning sound, the middle vowel sound, and the ending sound, and then match a letter to each one. This CVC practice worksheet gives Kindergarten students that exact practice, one picture at a time. CVC stands for consonant-vowel-consonant, the simplest word shape in English and the first one young readers can sound out entirely on their own. Once children can segment and spell CVC words, they have the tool they need to decode hundreds of new words without help.
This kindergarten cvc words worksheet keeps the task clear and uncluttered. Four large pictures — a cat, a pig, a dog, and a sun — each sit above three empty boxes. Students say the picture name out loud, stretch it into its three sounds, and write one letter in each box to spell the word. The four words use four different short vowels (a, i, o, u), so children practice every part of the word instead of repeating the same vowel four times. Read the directions together, model the first picture as a class, then let students finish the rest independently or with a partner. The included answer key makes checking quick.

This CVC practice worksheet helps children in three ways. First, it builds phonemic awareness, because a student has to break a spoken word into separate sounds before a single letter goes on the page. Second, it strengthens letter-sound knowledge in all three positions — beginning, middle, and ending — instead of only the first letter, which is where many young spellers get stuck. Third, the picture support lets children work on their own: no reading is needed to begin, so students who are still learning letter names can succeed without an adult beside them for every item.
Teachers and parents can stretch this activity in plenty of fun ways. Build the same four words with magnetic letters or letter tiles before writing them down. Play a sound-tapping game, tapping one finger for each sound in a word and then counting how many sounds you heard. Go on a CVC hunt around the classroom or the house for objects with three-sound names, such as mop, cup, bed, fan, and pen. You can also change one letter in a finished word to make a brand-new one — cat to cot to cut — which shows children just how powerful their new skill really is.
