Learning to hear the beginning, middle, and ending sounds in a word is one of the most important early phonics skills a child can build. This Beginning, Middle, and Ending Sounds Worksheet helps young learners break simple CVC words—like cat, sun, and dog—into their three separate sounds, a skill that builds the foundation for reading and spelling. When children can segment a word into its sounds, they can begin to sound out brand-new words on their own.
This worksheet shows six friendly pictures, each standing for a short CVC word. Children say the name of each picture, stretch the word out slowly, and then write the beginning, middle, and ending sound in the three boxes below it.
