From our teachers' playbook

Listen closely, it's hiding in the middle!

What do kids learn about middle sounds?

Middle sounds are the trickiest sounds to hear in a short word. In c-a-t, kids usually catch the /c/ and the /t/ first, but the short vowel in the middle takes practice. Learning to hear the middle sound means listening for the vowel: is it bag or bug? pin or pen? Once kids can pull a CVC word apart into three sounds, they can read and spell hundreds of short words. The click comes when they hear the difference between /e/ and /i/ and stop guessing.

Our favorite ways to make middle sounds stick

Middle sounds are about sharp listening. These moves train little ears.

Push a sound, say a sound

Draw three boxes and give kids three chips. Say "sun" slowly and kids push a chip into each box as they hear each sound. Then point to the middle box: "What sound lives here?" Seeing the word split into three parts makes the middle easy to find.

Why it works: teaching letter sounds directly and in order is one of the best-supported findings in reading research (National Reading Panel, 2000).

Short vowel showdown

Use a quick game where kids hear a word and choose its vowel sound. Mix all five short vowels so they really have to listen. Play it a few minutes a day for steady practice.

Why it works: playful practice with a clear goal keeps kids practicing longer, and simple learning games have been shown to build real skills (Ramani and Siegler, 2008).

Two vowels, one choice

Give kids pictures and two vowel choices, like e or a. They say the word, stretch the middle and circle the right letter. Working with just two vowels at a time keeps it from being overwhelming.

Why it works: pairing a picture with each word gives kids two ways to remember it, a well-tested principle of how people learn (Mayer, 2009).

Questions about middle sounds

What is a middle sound?

It's the sound in the middle of a word, usually the vowel in a short CVC word. In "dog," the middle sound is /o/.

Why is the middle sound hardest to hear?

Short vowels sound alike, especially /e/ and /i/, and they're squeezed between two consonants. Kids naturally notice the beginning and end first.

When do kids learn middle sounds?

Most kids work on middle sounds in kindergarten and 1st grade, right after they can hear beginning and ending sounds.

How can I practice middle sounds at home?

Say a CVC word slowly and ask your child for the middle sound. Then switch it: "If I change the middle of 'pig' to /e/, what word do I get?" Five minutes a day helps a lot.
