Place value is the idea that a digit’s position tells you what it is worth, and it is the foundation of every four-digit number a third grader reads, writes, and compares. This Place Value Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, Ones Worksheet gives students focused practice moving between expanded form and standard form, so that thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones stop being labels to memorize and start being amounts students actually understand.
The Place Value Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, Ones Worksheet is a printable two-page activity with an answer key. In Part A, students read an expanded form written in words and write the matching four-digit number in standard form; the last three items list the places out of order, so students have to read the place name instead of copying the position. In Part B, they work backward and break a four-digit number into the digit that belongs in each place, including the zeros that hold a place open. Part C finishes with two applied questions, one of which asks students to explain in writing what a zero in the tens place tells them about a number.
