Using RI.1.5 First Grade Common Core Lesson, students know and use various text features (headings, tables of contents, glossaries, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text.
Being aware of text features is an important step for your students. This lesson will teach them about the most prominent text features that they will find in their books.

Introduce this lesson by showing your students different text features in a book. Ask students how that text feature helps them as they are reading. Record their answers on an anchor chart for student reference. Then, students label examples of text features in the books that they are reading. Finally, students share examples of the text features that they have found.
