About this resource

Description

Weather alerts are everywhere — on the radio, on a phone screen, and across the bottom of the television — but the words that carry the message are the part students rarely get taught. An advisory, a watch and a warning do not mean the same thing, and knowing the difference is what turns a scrolling headline into useful information. This weather warning vocabulary worksheet gives 4th grade students a clear, calm way to learn those words, along with the everyday science vocabulary that sits beside them: forecast, humidity and thermometer.

The sheet opens with a Word Box of six weather words. Students read each clue, decide which word fits, and print the answer on the line inside that card. Because three of the six words are alert levels, students cannot answer by recognizing a picture — they have to read for the detail that separates one term from the next. A second section adds two more weather words that are not in the box at all, so students finish by recalling vocabulary instead of selecting it. This weather alert vocabulary worksheet works well as a science warm-up, a partner activity, or a quick check before a weather unit test.

What’s Included

  • 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
  • Answer key
  • 6 Word Box clue cards plus 2 recall items — 8 weather vocabulary activities in all

There are three reasons this weather warning vocabulary worksheet helps students learn the skill. First, every clue is written at a 4th grade reading level, so the challenge lives in the science vocabulary rather than in decoding the sentence. Second, the alert words are taught as a set, side by side, which is the only way a student can see that a watch points forward in time while a warning points at right now. Third, the last two items ask for words that never appear on the page, which moves students from recognition into recall and shows a teacher who really knows the vocabulary.

Teachers and parents can stretch this activity in a few easy ways. Keep the sheet nearby and check the local forecast together for a week, writing down any alert that appears and naming its level. Ask students to write a short radio script that announces one of the six words to a town. Post a classroom thermometer by the window and record the temperature each morning, then compare the numbers with what the forecast predicted. Older students can sort news headlines into advisory, watch and warning piles and defend each choice with evidence from the text.
