Famous scientists give students a friendly way into the scientific method, because every discovery on this page started with someone asking a question and testing an idea. This Scientist Matching Worksheet introduces six scientists whose work students already meet every day, from the light bulb overhead to the traffic light on the corner. Learning who did the work, and what problem that work solved, gives 4th grade students a concrete picture of what scientists actually do.
The scientist matching worksheet asks students to read six short descriptions of scientific work and draw a line to the scientist who did it. Because no description names its invention in the same words the scientist is known by, students have to read for detail rather than copy a label. A short answer section then sends students back into the matches for one written explanation, so reading and reasoning stay connected. Print one copy per student, read the directions together, and let students work through Part A before they write.
