How to teach Earth Science
Using Soil Sand Silt Worksheet, students observe soil, sand, and silt using a hand lens to determine the different components of each material.
Soil is composed of minerals, organic matter, water, and air. Sand is minute fragments of rock that have been broken down by weathering. Sand is between 1/16 mm and 2 mm large. Silt is composed of smaller and finer particles than sand.
Spread a cup of rich soil, sand, and silt out on a large piece of white paper. Next, use a hand lens, observe the different components of each material. Then, draw your material and label what you see.
