About this resource
Description
The Spelling Word Definitions Worksheet helps second graders connect a spelling word to what it actually means. Learning to spell a word is only half the job — a speller who can also explain a word owns it, and can use it correctly in writing. This page gives students a small, friendly dictionary to work with: six spelling words in a word box, four plain-language meanings to read, and two skills that a beginning dictionary user needs every day, finding the word that fits a meaning and putting words in ABC order.
This Spelling Word Definitions Worksheet is a two-page printable, and it is built to be used with no setup at all. Print it, hand it out, and let students work on their own or with a partner. Part A asks the child to read four sentences that each give the meaning of a word, then write the missing word from the box. Part B prints two spelling words side by side on each line and asks which one comes first in ABC order — the exact move a child makes when hunting for a word in a real dictionary. Two of the six words in the box are extras that do not answer anything, so students have to read carefully instead of crossing off by elimination. An answer key is included on the second page.
What’s Included
- One printable worksheet page with a six-word word box
- Four meaning sentences with a blank to fill in
- Four ABC order questions using the same spelling words
- A complete answer key page
Three Reasons This Helps Kids
- Matching a meaning to a word builds vocabulary at the same time as spelling, so one page does two jobs.
- Two unused choices in the word box mean a child has to read every sentence rather than guess from the leftovers.
- Alphabetizing to the second letter, as in basket and button, is the exact skill that makes a beginning dictionary usable.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
- Use this 2nd grade spelling worksheet as a Monday introduction to the week’s spelling list, then repeat it on Friday as a review.
- Hand each student a beginning dictionary and have them look up the four answers to check their own work.
- Ask students to write one new sentence for a word that was not used, which turns the extra choices into a quick writing warm-up.
- Cut the word box off and use the six words as a word sort by first letter, then by second letter.
