Sorting words by the number of beats you hear is one of the first steps toward reading longer words with confidence. This syllable sorting worksheet gives second grade students a clear, hands-on way to hear the parts inside a word and then organize what they hear. Clapping, tapping, and counting syllables helps children break unfamiliar words into smaller chunks, which makes decoding faster and spelling more accurate.
This syllable sorting worksheet is a two-part printable with an answer key included. In Part A, students read the nine words in the word box, clap the syllables in each one, and write every word on a line in the 1 Syllable, 2 Syllables, or 3 Syllables column. In Part B, they say five new words out loud and write the number of syllables they hear in the box beside each word. Use it as morning work, a literacy center, a small-group warm-up, or homework practice.
