About this resource
Description
The Taking Notes Worksheet teaches first graders the two questions good note-takers ask about everything they read: what is this mostly about, and which details prove it? Instead of a blank organizer, this Taking Notes Worksheet gives children a real informational text to work from, so the main idea and the key ideas are things they find rather than things they guess.
Children read a short ninety-three word passage about how an apple grows, from the first bud on the branch to the crates of ripe fruit heading to the store. A full-page illustration of an autumn orchard sits above the text. Five fill-in-the-bubble questions follow: the first asks for the main idea of the whole passage, and the next four ask for the supporting key ideas hidden in each part of it. Read the text together, let children bubble in their answers, then check the answer key on the last page and talk about which sentence proved each answer.
What’s Included
- An original ninety-three word informational passage written on a 1st grade reading level
- A full-color orchard illustration above the text
- One main-idea question and four supporting key-idea questions
- Three large, easy-to-read answer choices for every question
- A complete answer key on the final page
- A print-ready PDF sized for standard letter paper
Three Reasons This Helps Kids
- Pairing one main-idea question with four detail questions shows children how the two are related instead of teaching them separately.
- A real passage gives note-taking something to be about, so children practice the skill rather than filling in an empty web.
- Bubble answers give beginning readers low-stress practice with the format they will meet on real assessments.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Before answering anything, have children read the passage twice and underline one word in each sentence that feels important. Those underlined words become their notes. Then work the questions and compare: did the notes already contain the answers? Ask children to say the main idea in their own words before they look at the choices, and use this 1st grade main idea worksheet as a small-group warm-up, a literacy-center task, or a quick check before a longer nonfiction read.
