By third grade a reader should not be sounding out together or myself – those words need to come off the page instantly, and the Third Grade Sight Words Bingo is built to make that automatic recall fun to practise. The third-grade Dolch list is the last of the sight-word sets, and it is the one that carries the connecting words a child meets in every chapter book. A game is the right way to drill them, because a student will read a word twenty times in a round of bingo and never once feel drilled.
This 3rd grade sight words activity is a single printable board of twenty-four third-grade Dolch words in a five-by-five grid with a free space in the middle. Print one board per student, read the words aloud from your own list in any order, and have children colour in each word as they find it. Five in a row wins. Because every board is coloured in rather than written on, one print run lasts as long as you have crayons, and the same page works for a whole-class game, a small reading group, or a partner at the kitchen table.

Three things make the Third Grade Sight Words Bingo worth the ten minutes it takes to play. First, sight words are learned by exposure, and a single round puts every word in front of a child several times without a worksheet in sight. Second, listening for a word and finding it in print connects the sound of the word to its shape, which is exactly the link a struggling reader is missing. Third, the game levels the room: a child who reads slowly can win, so the students who most need the practice are the ones who stay in it.
Teachers and parents can stretch one board a long way. Call the words in a sentence instead of on their own so children hear them in context. Ask the winner to read their five words back before you clear the board. Play with two boards each for a faster round, or let a student be the caller, which is reading practice of its own. Keep a stack of finished boards and use one as a quick check the following week to see which words have stuck.
