This you write the story clown picture worksheet gives second graders one lively picture and asks them to turn it into a story. A friendly clown in a polka-dot suit is juggling three bright balls high in the air, and two girls stand nearby, looking up with big smiles. Will he catch them all? Nothing on the page says who these people are, where they are, or what happens next. That is the point. The picture hands students a moment of fun, and the eight writing lines below give them room to build a whole story around it.
Picture prompts work because they take away the hardest part of writing for a young student, which is finding something to write about, while leaving every real choice in place. The scene shows the middle of the action. Students still have to name the characters, explain what is happening, and carry the story to an ending. The directions ask for exactly that, so a student who writes one caption has not finished, while a student who names the clown and the two girls and tells what happens next has.

Use this 2nd grade narrative writing worksheet as morning work, in a writing center, or as a warm up before a narrative unit. Before anyone writes, ask the class where the clown might be performing and what the girls might say to him. List some possible names for the three characters on the board, then let students pick their own. Afterward, have volunteers read their stories aloud so the class hears how one picture led to many different endings. At home, ask your child to tell the story out loud first, then write it down. The sheet prints cleanly in black and white for homework folders and substitute plans.
