From our teachers' playbook

Little seeds, big science!

What do 2nd graders learn about plants?

In 2nd grade, kids find out what plants need to grow: sunlight, water, air, space and nutrients from the soil. They label the parts of a plant (roots, stem, leaves, flower and seeds) and explain each part's job. They plant seeds, make predictions and test what happens when a plant gets no light or no water. They also learn how animals help plants by spreading seeds and moving pollen. The click comes when a bean seed finally pokes through the soil and kids rush to measure it!

Our favorite ways to teach plants in 2nd grade

Plants are the perfect hands-on science unit. Here's how we make it grow.

Test what plants need

Plant four bean seeds: one with everything, one in a dark closet, one with no water and one in a crowded cup. Kids predict which will grow best, then check them every few days. Real results beat any textbook answer.

Why it works: kids understand an idea best when they touch it, then draw it, then write it, the order the U.S. Department of Education recommends for elementary math.

Draw and label the parts

Pull a real plant out of the soil and look at the roots together. Then kids draw it and label each part with its job: "Roots drink water." Drawing from real life makes the vocabulary stick.

Why it works: children learn more from words and pictures together than from words alone (Mayer, 2009).

Plant journal check-ins

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, kids measure their plant and draw what changed. Spreading observations over weeks shows the whole life cycle and builds patience too!

Why it works: short practice spread over several days beats one long session, according to a large review of learning research (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).

Questions parents and teachers ask about 2nd grade plants

What do 2nd graders learn about plants?

Second graders learn what plants need to grow, the parts of a plant and their jobs, and how plants depend on animals to spread seeds and pollen. They often test these ideas with real seeds.

What do plants need to grow?

Plants need sunlight, water, air, space and nutrients from soil. Kids can test this by growing seeds with and without one of these needs.

What is an easy plant experiment for 2nd grade?

Grow bean seeds in clear cups with damp paper towels. Kids can watch the roots and stems grow and record changes every few days.

How long does it take a bean seed to sprout?

Bean seeds usually sprout in about a week in a warm spot with damp soil or paper towels. That's quick enough to keep kids excited.
