How to teach Money
In this 2.MD.8 Second Grade Common Core Lesson, students solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and ¢ symbols appropriately.
This lesson teaches students how to count coins to tell how much an item is worth. This lesson is perfect for small group, math centers or independent practice.
Use the shopping list provided to figure out how much each items is worth. Then, display that amount in coins. Finally, count and record how much the item is worth.

After the activity, share students discussions that you heard to improve coin counting skills.
