Description
Counting coins and solving a money story are two different jobs, and a child can be good at the first while the second still stops them cold. Naming the coins is recall; deciding whether the problem wants you to add what someone has or subtract what they spent is reasoning. This Counting Money Word Problems Worksheet puts both on one page, in that order, so the counting is warmed up and out of the way before the stories start.
Part one shows two collections of real coins — pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters, drawn at their true relative sizes so the dime really is smaller than the penny — and asks for the total of each. Part three, four and five are word problems: one adds dimes and pennies, one asks for change from two quarters, and one adds a found nickel and three pennies to a starting amount. Each problem sits in its own box with open space to show the work, because a money answer that arrives with no thinking behind it tells a teacher nothing.
