Description
This Climate Research Worksheet gives third graders a real job: pick one region of the United States and find out what its weather is like over a whole year. Weather is what the sky is doing today, but climate is the pattern a place sees season after season, and that difference is one of the big ideas of third grade science. With this climate research worksheet, students look up their region in a book or on a safe website and record what they learn in their own words.
The page starts with two short lines where students name the region they chose and the states that belong to it. Three labeled sections follow. The first asks what the weather is like there in summer and in winter. The second gives three numbered lines for the kinds of extreme weather the region can get, such as blizzards, hurricanes, tornadoes or heat waves. The last section asks why people like to visit or live in that climate. A cheerful strip of snowy mountains, a rainy forest, a sunny beach and a hot desert along the bottom reminds students how different the climates of one country can be. Because every child chooses a region, no two finished pages look the same.

There are three reasons this 3rd grade weather worksheet helps children learn. First, it turns reading into a purpose, since students read to find facts they need rather than to finish a page.
