About this resource
Description
Big Q, little q and the Q in queen all come together in the Letter Q Game, a storybook castle fair archery contest for preschool kids. Roxy stands on the archery field with her wooden longbow and a quiver full of suction-cup arrows, and three round targets stand in the grass, each with a letter or a picture on its bullseye. Kids tap a target to shoot it, or pull back the bow and let go to aim it themselves. The bow creaks, the string twangs, and the arrow lands with a THWOCK! When a child hits a big Q, the target’s rings flash and the Q flies down to its own prize rosette. Playing the letter q game again and again helps little learners recognize the big Q and the little q, tell q apart from look-alike letters like p and g, and hear that queen, quilt, quail and question all start with Q.
In this letter q phonics game, Roxy cheers kids on through three rounds. First they shoot the big Q among letters like O, C and G, with the tip that big Q is a big circle with a little tail. Then they find the little q among look-alikes like p, d and b, with the tip that little q is a little circle with a straight line down on the right (little p has its line on the left). Last, they shoot the pictures that start with Q and skip the sun, the duck and the fish. The letters and pictures a child mixed up come back for one more try. Roxy reads every direction out loud, names each answer (“Queen! Queen starts with the letter Q.”) and gives a kind hint after a wrong choice. An arrow that lands in the grass just pops back to the quiver.
Kids build streaks of 3, 5 and 10 in a Row, chase a High Score and go for a Perfect Game, and every round ends with a rosette celebration. A golden surprise can sparkle once a round. At the end, kids earn up to five stars.
