About this resource
Description
Making an inference means using clues plus what you already know to figure out something that is not said out loud. This making inferences activity lets 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade students practice that skill with pictures before they apply it to stories, so every child can join in, even early readers.
Each picture card shows a small set of clues, such as a dripping umbrella next to wet rain boots or a melted snowman with its carrot nose in a puddle. Students look closely, think about what must have happened, and match the picture to one of eight lettered What Happened? cards. On the record sheet they write the matching letter and one clue that helped them decide. A 2nd grade practice worksheet then shows four new pictures, and students fill in the bubble next to the sentence that tells what happened.

Why This Inference Activity Helps Kids
First, pictures let students focus on the thinking of an inference without the extra work of decoding a long passage. Second, writing down the clue that helped them teaches students to back up an answer with evidence. Third, the matching game keeps students talking with a partner about what they notice, which builds vocabulary and reasoning.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Use the making inferences activity at a reading center, as a partner game, or as a quick warm-up before a read-aloud. Ask students to point to each clue before they choose a card. This 1st grade inference activity also works at home: look at a photo together and ask, What do you think just happened?
