About this resource
Description
Rhyming words end with the same sound, even when their endings are spelled in different ways. This rhyming matching worksheet helps 3rd grade students listen past the spelling and hear the sound, so they learn that eight rhymes with plate and laugh rhymes with half. Strong rhyming skills build phonological awareness, spelling patterns, and confident reading of poetry and word play.
The rhyming matching worksheet begins with a short reminder about rhyming words and a friendly bell and shell example. Students then draw a line to match six words with their rhymes, fill in four sentences with a rhyming word from a word box, and write two sentences of their own that each use a rhyming pair. Read the directions aloud together, try the first match as a class, and let students finish independently.
What’s Included
- Part A: match six word pairs that rhyme but are spelled differently
- Part B: choose the rhyming word from a word box to finish four sentences
- Part C: write two original sentences that each use a rhyming pair
- A complete answer key on the last page
3 Reasons This Worksheet Helps Kids
First, matching rhymes with different spellings trains students to focus on sounds instead of letters. Second, the sentence practice shows how rhyming words work inside real writing, not just in lists. Third, writing their own rhyming sentences gives students a creative way to apply the skill and check their understanding.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Use this 3rd grade rhyming worksheet as a literacy center, a morning warm-up, or a quick homework page. After students finish, invite them to read their Part C sentences aloud and let classmates listen for the rhyming pair. You can extend the lesson by asking students to brainstorm a third word for each rhyming pair, or by writing a short class poem that uses the pairs from Part A.
