Description
When a vowel is followed by the letter r, the r takes over and the vowel stops saying its usual short or long sound. That is why car does not rhyme with cat, and why her, bird, and fur all end with the same sound even though they are spelled three different ways. These five patterns – ar, er, ir, or, and ur – are some of the first spelling rules that break the sounding-out habits young readers have just worked so hard to build, so they need to be met again and again in real sentences rather than on a flashcard. This r-controlled vowels word hunt worksheet gives second graders that practice inside a short farm story they can read from start to finish on their own.
The worksheet opens with an eight-sentence story about Mya and Caleb, who feed a horse, spot a bird, and fill a cart with hay. Twelve words in that story carry an r-controlled vowel, and students circle every one of them as they read. Because the story also contains r-blends like green, brown, gray, tree, and fresh, students cannot simply circle every word with an r in it – they have to check whether the r is sitting right behind a vowel. Part B turns this bossy r vowel hunt activity into something the teacher can actually check: students write the four words they found for ar, the four for or, and the four for er, ir, and ur. Read the story aloud together first, then let students hunt independently with a crayon or a highlighter.

Three things make this r-controlled vowels word hunt worksheet work. First, the words appear in connected text instead of a list, so students meet the pattern the way they will meet it in a book, and the sentence around each word supports the meaning. Second, the built-in r-blend distractors force a real decision on every word, which is exactly the discrimination that separates a student who has memorized a list from one who understands the rule. Third, the sorting chart makes the thinking visible: a teacher can glance at three rows and see instantly whether a student is confusing ar with or, or lumping er, ir, and ur together without hearing that they share one sound.
Keep the hunt going after the page is finished. Hand students a familiar picture book and give them two minutes to find as many bossy r words as they can, then chart the finds by pattern on the board. Play a quick sorting game with index cards – one card per word, three baskets – and let partners race to sort them. Send students on a walk around the classroom or the house to list every r-controlled word they can spot on labels, posters, and signs (marker, corner, first, door). Or ask students to write their own four-sentence farm story and challenge a partner to circle the bossy r words in it.
