Description
Sequencing is the reading and writing skill of putting the events of a story in the order they really happened. When second graders can say what came first, next, then, and last, they understand plot, retell a story accurately, and plan their own writing with a clear beginning, middle, and end. This sequencing brainstorming worksheet works on both halves of that skill at once: reading a short story and ordering its events, and then brainstorming and sequencing the steps of an activity from the student’s own life.
On Part A, students read a five-sentence story about a boy named Landon planting a sunflower seed, then number five scrambled events from 1 to 5 to show the order they happened in. Part B turns the page into a planner: students think of an activity they do in steps — making a sandwich, feeding a pet, getting ready for school — and write what they do First, Next, Then, and Last on the four writing lines. Use this 2nd grade sequencing worksheet as guided practice after a read-aloud, as independent morning work, or as a prewriting page before students draft a how-to story. This sequencing brainstorming worksheet helps kids in three ways. First, ordering scrambled events makes students reread the passage for evidence instead of guessing, which strengthens comprehension and attention to detail. Second, the transition words First, Next, Then, and Last become part of a child’s own vocabulary, so retellings and explanations are much easier to follow. Third, moving straight from reading a sequence to planning one shows students that plot is something writers build on purpose, not something that simply happens.
Teachers and parents can keep the skill going all week. Cut apart sentence strips from a favorite picture book and have students rebuild the story on the floor. Ask a child to give step-by-step directions for a simple task while a partner follows them exactly — mixed-up steps make the mistake funny and memorable. Photograph four moments of a class activity and have students caption them in order. At home, invite your child to narrate a recipe or a bedtime routine using the four transition words, then write it down together.
