Description
Putting story events in the right order is one of the first big steps a young reader takes toward understanding a whole text. This Story Events Order of Events Worksheet gives 2nd graders a short, friendly narrative and asks them to decide what happened first, next, and last. Sequencing is the skill that turns a pile of separate sentences into a story a child can retell, summarize, and think about. When students can track the order of events in a story, they are also laying the groundwork for plot, cause and effect, and the deeper comprehension work that comes in later grades.
This 2nd grade sequencing worksheet is built around an original story called “A Walk to Grandma’s.” On page one, students read about Jean and her brother Carl as they walk across town, stop at a fruit stand, cut through the park by the pond, help a neighbor gather his letters, and finally reach Grandma’s front door. On page two, six events from the story appear out of order, and students write the numbers 1 through 6 in the boxes to put them back in sequence. Two short-answer questions then ask what happened right before and right after a specific moment, which pushes students past simple recall. Read the story aloud together, or let students read it on their own and use the page as a quick reading check.

There are three reasons this Story Events Order of Events Worksheet helps children learn sequencing. First, the events are printed out of order, so students have to go back into the text and reread instead of copying sentences straight down the page. Second, the short response questions use the same time-order language teachers want children to notice, so the vocabulary of sequencing gets practiced right alongside the skill. Third, the story is written at a second-grade reading level, which means students spend their energy on the thinking rather than on decoding, and the picture gives them a concrete scene to hold onto while they work.
Teachers and parents can stretch this activity in plenty of easy ways. Cut the six event rows apart and let students physically arrange the strips on a desk before they write any numbers. Ask children to retell the walk to a partner using the words first, next, then, and finally. Have students draw a four-box comic of the story, or write a new ending and decide where it belongs in the order. The same routine works with a favorite picture book, a recipe, or the steps of an everyday task like packing a backpack for school.
