About this resource

Description

Insects are the largest group of animals on Earth, and learning about them is one of the best ways to build both science knowledge and reading skill at the same time. This insects life science reading comprehension worksheet gives 3rd Grade students an original non-fiction passage about insect body parts, hard outer shells, antennae, and the important jobs insects do in a garden. Reading comprehension is the ability to read a text closely and then explain what it actually said, and a science passage is the perfect place to practice it. Students meet real academic vocabulary — thorax, abdomen, invertebrate, antennae, and pollen — with every term defined right in the sentence that introduces it, exactly the way state reading assessments ask students to determine word meaning from context.

This 3rd grade insects worksheet is a three-page printable. Page one holds the illustrated passage and a full-color watercolor scene of a honeybee resting on a sunflower. Page two carries the questions: three fill-in-the-bubble multiple choice items, five word-bank sentences, and one written response. Page three is the complete answer key. Have students read the passage twice — once straight through, and once with a pencil to underline the sentence that answers each question — then work through Parts A, B, and C. It works just as well as morning work, a science center, a guided reading follow-up, or homework.

What’s Included

  • 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
  • Answer key
  • A 216-word original non-fiction passage about insects, written on a 3rd Grade reading level
  • 3 multiple choice questions, 5 word-bank sentences, and 1 written-response question
  • A full-color illustration of a honeybee on a sunflower

There are three reasons this resource helps children learn. First, it teaches reading and science together, so students practice pulling evidence out of a text while they learn real facts about how an insect body is built. Second, the questions climb in difficulty: the multiple choice items check literal recall, the word bank asks students to place science vocabulary correctly, and the final question asks them to explain an idea in their own complete sentences. Third, every answer in this insects life science reading comprehension worksheet is findable in the passage, so a struggling reader can always be sent back to the text instead of guessing.

Extend the lesson beyond the page. Take students outside with a magnifying glass and a clipboard and have them count the legs on any insect they find — six every time. Ask them to draw and label a bug with its head, thorax, and abdomen. Compare an insect with a spider and let them discover why a spider is not an insect at all. Start a class chart of helpful insects and what each one does for a garden, or read the passage aloud as a shared reading and have partners quiz each other with their own questions. At home, families can plant a few flowers and watch which insects visit.
