Uppercase Letter Order Worksheet

Before a child can read a word, they have to know the letters that build it — and knowing the alphabet means knowing the order it runs in. This Uppercase Letter Order Worksheet hands kindergarten students the alphabet in short, manageable runs of six capital letters, with two letters missing from every run. Children read what is already there, work out what belongs in the gap, and print the missing capital letter in the box. Because each run is short, a child who is still learning the sequence can say the alphabet quietly to themselves and find the answer, instead of being asked to hold all twenty-six letters in their head at once.

The sheet comes in two parts. Part A holds four rows — A through F, G through L, M through R and S through X — and the blanks sit in a different pair of positions in every row, so a child cannot settle into a pattern and stop reading. Part B goes one step further: three items show two letters in order and ask for the letter that comes next, finishing at X, Y and Z so the page reaches the end of the alphabet. Three things make this Uppercase Letter Order Worksheet work in a real classroom. First, every writing box is large and every box is exactly the same size, so a five-year-old has genuine room to print a capital letter and nothing about the layout whispers which letter belongs where — the child has to read to answer. Second, the missing letters move: one row blanks the third and sixth letters, the next blanks the second and fourth, so the sheet keeps asking for the sequence rather than for a habit. Third, Part B raises the demand from filling a gap to predicting what follows, which is the same thinking a child needs when they meet an alphabetized list, a dictionary or a classroom word wall.

Away from the page, keep the letters moving. Say the alphabet together and stop in the middle so your child supplies the next letter out loud. Lay out magnetic or foam capitals in a line, take two away while your child closes their eyes, and have them name what is gone. Point out capital letters on signs, cereal boxes and mailboxes on the way home, and ask which letter comes right after. For a child who is ready, hand back the finished sheet and ask them to write the whole alphabet from A to Z on the back.
