Description
Writing out three digit numbers is the moment place value stops being a chart and starts being language. A second grader who can read 348 aloud still has to decide whether the written name is three hundred forty-eight or three hundred four eight, and that decision is where the hundreds, tens, and ones finally have to be understood as one whole number instead of three separate digits. This writing out three digit numbers worksheet gives students unhurried practice moving between the numeral and its number name, in both directions, so the connection becomes automatic.
The worksheet opens with a worked example and then asks students to write the number name for five three-digit numerals on generous handwriting lines. A second section reverses the task: students read a number name and write the matching numeral in a printed answer box. This three digit number names practice deliberately includes numbers with a zero in the tens place and numbers in the teens, because those are the two shapes children most often write incorrectly. Print it as a warm-up, a place value review, a homework page, or a quick assessment before moving on to four-digit numbers.

Three things make this writing out three digit numbers worksheet useful. First, it works in both directions, so students cannot answer by pattern-matching a single format. Second, the number set is chosen on purpose rather than at random, so tricky cases such as 907 and 620 come up while the sheet is still short enough to finish in one sitting. Third, the answer key means a teacher or parent can check the page in seconds and see exactly which place value a mistake came from.
For more practice away from the page, read house numbers, page numbers, and prices aloud together and ask a child to say the number name before writing it. Roll three number cubes and build a number, then race to write its name. Write number names on index cards and numerals on another set, then play a matching game face down. Ask students to write a number name and hand it to a partner to write as a numeral, and compare the two. Keep the language consistent, and remember that hundreds and tens are joined without the word and.
