Description
Hundreds, tens, and ones are the three places that build every three-digit number, and learning to read them is one of the biggest steps a second grader takes in math. When a child can look at a set of base ten blocks and say “that is two hundreds, four tens, and five ones,” the number 245 stops being three separate digits and becomes a real quantity. This HTO place value worksheet was built to make that connection visible, using the same hundreds flats, tens rods, and ones units that classrooms keep in the manipulative bin.
The worksheet has two parts. In Part A, students count three sets of base ten blocks and write the matching number on the line inside each card, including two sets that contain a zero place so they practice holding a place with nothing in it. In Part B, they work in the other direction: a food drive word problem and two expanded-form sentences ask them to put hundreds, tens, and ones back together into standard form. Use this 2nd grade place value worksheet as morning work, as a quick check after a block lesson, in a math center, or as homework that a parent can follow without any extra explanation. A complete answer key is included on the last page.

Three things make this practice stick. First, it moves in both directions — blocks to number and number to blocks — so students build real flexibility instead of memorizing one routine. Second, the zero places are planned, not accidental, which heads off the classic mistake of writing 32 for three hundreds and two ones. Teachers and parents can stretch the skill in a few easy ways. Hand a child a small pile of base ten blocks and ask them to build a number you call out, then trade ten ones for a rod and ten rods for a flat so regrouping becomes something they do with their hands. Play a quick game where each player rolls three digits and builds the largest number they can. Point out three-digit numbers on house signs, price tags, and page numbers, and ask how many hundreds are hiding inside.
