How to Teach Making Predictions
The You Make The Call Inferences Worksheet helps young readers practice one of the most useful thinking skills in reading: using clues to predict what will happen next. When children read, they are always guessing at what comes after, and a good prediction is really an inference built from the details the author gives. A seed that gets water and sun, a tower that gets bumped, or dark clouds in the sky all point toward one likely outcome. Teaching students to notice those clues, and to explain why one ending makes more sense than another, builds strong comprehension that carries into every story they read.
About This Worksheet
In this 2nd grade predictions worksheet, students read three short everyday stories and fill in the bubble beside the ending the clues support. Each story card shows a picture of the clue, such as a pot of soil with a watering can or a dark storm cloud, so children can connect the words to what they see. In the last card, students make the call on their own and write a prediction about a dog that grabs its leash and runs to the door. Read the first card together, model how to underline the clue words, and then let students finish the rest on their own or with a partner.
What’s Included
- One page with three multiple-choice prediction stories and one written prediction
- Kid-friendly pictures that show the clue in each story
- An answer key with the correct endings and a sample written answer
Why It Helps Kids
First, every story is short and written with words a second grader can read with ease, so the effort goes into thinking about clues rather than decoding. Second, only one ending in each set can be defended, which teaches children to rule out choices that do not match the details instead of guessing. Third, the written prediction at the end asks students to produce an inference in their own words, which shows a teacher whether the skill has truly clicked.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Pause during a read-aloud and ask, “What do you think will happen next, and which clue told you?” Look at a picture book cover and predict the story before opening it. At home, turn everyday moments into prediction games, like guessing what will happen when ice sits in the sun. After students finish the You Make The Call Inferences Worksheet, keep a class chart of predictions and check them after reading to celebrate good thinking, even when a prediction changes.
