About this resource

Description

Abbreviations are the short forms writers use every day — Dr. for Doctor, St. for Street, Mon. for Monday, ft. for feet. Learning them is a real reading and writing skill, because a student who cannot unpack an abbreviation loses the meaning of an address, a calendar, a recipe, or a science label. This abbreviations fill in the blank worksheet gives third grade students focused practice moving in both directions: shortening a word correctly, and expanding a shortened form back into the word it stands for. Because abbreviations always end in a period and often begin with a capital letter, they also reinforce the punctuation and capitalization rules students are already working on in grammar.

This printable worksheet is organized into three short, clearly separated parts so students build the skill in steps instead of guessing. In Part A, students use a word bank of six abbreviations to write the correct short form beside each full word. In Part B, the direction reverses: students read an abbreviation and write out the complete word it represents, with no word bank to lean on. In Part C, students apply everything by rewriting three sentences, replacing every abbreviation with the word it stands for. Print one copy per student and use it for morning work, a grammar center, guided practice, homework, or a quick check before a unit test. The included answer key makes grading fast and lets students check their own work.

What’s Included

  • One printable Abbreviations worksheet (PDF)
  • Part A: six word-bank items matching full words to abbreviations
  • Part B: six abbreviations to expand into complete words
  • Part C: three sentences to rewrite using the full words
  • A complete answer key

How This Helps Kids Learn

First, the two-way practice builds true understanding instead of memorization. A student who can only match a word to its short form has not really learned the skill; going both directions proves the connection is solid. Second, the sentence rewriting in Part C moves the skill into real writing, where abbreviations actually live. Students must notice several abbreviations in one sentence, expand each one, and keep the sentence grammatical and correctly capitalized. Third, the clean layout of this abbreviations fill in the blank worksheet with a word bank, generous writing lines, and separated sections lowers the reading load, so students spend their attention on the abbreviations themselves rather than on decoding crowded directions.

Teaching Ideas

Start an abbreviation wall chart and add a new category each week: days, months, titles, measurements, and street words. Have students hunt for abbreviations in a newspaper, a recipe card, a map, or a sports box score and bring one back to share. Play a quick matching game with index cards, full word on one card and abbreviation on the other, and let partners race to pair them. Ask students to write a short note or invitation that uses at least four abbreviations correctly, then trade papers and rewrite a partner’s note in full words. For extra reinforcement, this 2nd grade abbreviations worksheet style of practice pairs well with proper-noun and capitalization lessons, since so many abbreviations are titles and place names. Families can practice at home simply by reading the calendar and the mail together.
