About this resource

Description

A making inferences graphic organizer gives young readers a simple path from the words on the page to an idea the author never states. Making an inference means adding clues from the text to something you already know, and this 2nd grade reading worksheet turns that thinking into three easy steps.

Students read three short stories about everyday moments: a child coming in from recess, a sweet smell in the kitchen, and a sleepy evening at home. Under each story they fill in a Clues I Found box, a What I Know box, and a What I Infer box. The plus and equals signs show children that clues plus what they know equals an inference. Use the making inferences graphic organizer as guided practice, a reading center, or quick homework.

What’s Included

  • One printable 2nd grade worksheet titled Making Inferences
  • Three short, grade-level stories with a numbered organizer under each one
  • Clues I Found, What I Know, and What I Infer writing boxes with roomy lines
  • An answer key with model answers for every box

Why This Worksheet Helps Kids

  • It breaks inferring into three small steps that children can repeat with any book.
  • It teaches readers to point to exact words in the story as their evidence.
  • It shows kids that what they already know from real life helps them understand what they read.

Ideas for Teachers and Parents

Read the first story aloud and think through each clue together before children try the next two on their own. Ask students to share their What I Know answers, since these can differ even when the inference is the same. For extra fun, have children write their own two-sentence clue story for a partner to solve. This 2nd grade inference worksheet also pairs well with any picture book you are reading in class.
