The main idea is the most important point an author wants readers to understand, and the details are the facts that hold that point up. The Main Idea Graphic Organizer gives fourth graders a clear, reusable way to pull the main idea and key details out of any nonfiction text they read, from a science article to a chapter in a social studies book. Seeing the ideas laid out on one page helps students notice how every detail connects back to one big idea.
This 4th grade main idea worksheet works like a table. Students write the title of the text they read, record the main idea in the top box, and then add four supporting details in the numbered boxes below it, just like legs holding up a tabletop. Last, they use the main idea and details to write a short summary in their own words. Because students choose their own text, the page works with any book or article, and it can be copied again and again. Use this main idea graphic organizer during guided reading, in a literacy center, for independent reading, or as a note-taking page for research.

Try these ideas to get even more out of the page. Model the organizer first with a short article the whole class reads together. Have partners compare their main ideas and talk about which details best support each one. Cut the finished organizer apart and ask students to rebuild the table from the pieces. You can also collect a stack of completed organizers to create a class library of summaries.
