Description
A food chain is the story of how energy travels from the sun to a plant, and then from that plant to the animals that eat it. Third graders meet producers, herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, and decomposers for the first time in life science, and those five words are much easier to hold onto when they arrive inside a story instead of a glossary. This Food Chains Life Science Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives students an original nonfiction passage about a meadow, then asks them to go back into the text and prove what they know.
The passage follows one green field through a whole chain: sunlight falling on grass and flowers, a rabbit and a grasshopper eating those plants, a hawk gliding overhead, and the worms, beetles, and mushrooms that return everything to the soil so new plants can sprout. Use this 3rd grade life science worksheet as a guided reading passage, a science center, a homework page, or a quick comprehension check after a unit on ecosystems.
