Description
Putting the steps of a job in the right order is one of the first reading skills a child uses outside of a story, and this Planting A Seed Sequencing Worksheet gives second graders a warm, hands-on way to practice it. Planting a seed is a perfect sequence to start with, because every step depends on the one before it. You cannot drop a seed into a hole you have not dug yet, and you cannot cover a seed you have not dropped in. The order words First, Next, Then, After that, and Last are the clues that hold the chain together, and a reader who learns to look for them can order a set of directions, a science procedure, or the events of a story with the same confidence.
This 2nd grade sequencing worksheet holds two parts on one clean page. In Part A, five steps for planting a seed are printed out of order, each one beside an empty box. Students read all five, decide what has to happen first, and write the numbers 1 through 5 in the boxes. Because the steps are shuffled and each box is exactly the same size, nothing about the layout hints at the answer, so students have to read every sentence to place it. In Part B, two short questions ask students to step back from the list and think about it as a whole: what the steps are teaching, and which step follows another. That is the summarizing half of the skill. Use it during a plant unit, in a small reading group, as a quick check before a science lesson, or as homework.

There are three reasons this Planting A Seed Sequencing Worksheet helps children learn to sequence. First, the steps describe something a child can picture and has very likely done, so the ordering decision rests on real-world logic instead of guesswork, and a student who is unsure can reason it out rather than give up. Second, every step opens with a different order word, which teaches students to hunt for those signal words instead of relying on the order the sentences happen to appear in. Third, Part B turns the finished list back into a whole: naming what a set of steps teaches is summarizing, and doing it right after the ordering work means the two skills reinforce each other rather than sitting in separate lessons.
Teachers and parents can carry this page into the rest of the day. Plant a real seed in a cup of soil on a windowsill and have children call out each step as they do it, then check the list against the page. Write the five steps on sentence strips, mix them up on a pocket chart, and let a small group put them back in order together. Ask students to say the steps out loud using the order words, then to retell them to a partner without looking. For an extra challenge, have children write the steps for something else they know how to do, such as making a sandwich or feeding a pet, and trade papers to see whether a classmate can follow them.
