How to teach Summarizing
Using this Two Texts Important Information Activity, students read two texts on the same topic. They record important information on the graphic organizers in order to write or speak about the topic knowledgeably.
Being able to summarize the texts that you are reading helps your students to have a better comprehension of what they have read. This activity will help your student to ensure that they fully comprehend the topic they are learning about using two separate texts.
Pick a topic that you may be teaching in another content area such as Science or Social Studies and provide your students with multiple literary options on that topic. Students will pick two of the options and use the graphic organizers to take down important information about the topic.

Next, introduce your students to various texts about the given topic. Challenge your students to choose two texts and to use the graphic organizers to record important information. Finally, set a day for students to share about the topic either in writing or orally. Once finished, continue to expand on the importance of being able to summarize a text.
