Description
Hearing the very first sound in a spoken word is where reading begins, and the letters k, l and m are three of the clearest consonants for a young child to isolate. Each one holds its sound steadily at the front of a word — the /k/ in key, the /l/ in leaf, the /m/ in mug — so children can stretch the word out loud, catch that opening sound and match it to the letter that spells it. The Beginning Sounds K, L, M Worksheet gives kindergarten students nine chances to do exactly that, moving from saying a word to writing the letter that starts it.
This kindergarten beginning sounds worksheet is built around nine picture cards. The child looks at the picture, says its name out loud, listens for the very first sound, and then writes k, l or m on the wide handwriting line to finish the word. The rest of the word is already printed beside the blank, so a child who is still building confidence has a clear model to work from and can check that the word they made really is the word in the picture. Read the directions together once, do the first card as a group, and let students work through the rest independently or with a partner.

There are three reasons this Beginning Sounds K, L, M Worksheet helps children learn the skill so quickly. First, it links three things at once — a picture, a spoken sound and a written letter — which is what turns sound awareness into real letter-sound knowledge.
