Putting story events in order is one of the first real comprehension skills a young reader builds, and this Sequence of Events Graphic Organizer Worksheet gives second graders a clear place to practice it. When a child can say what happened first, what came next, what followed that, and what happened last, they are no longer just decoding words — they are holding a whole story in their head and retelling it in order. That is the foundation for summarizing, for narrative writing, and for following multi-step directions in every other subject.
This worksheet prints a short original story about two friends baking apple muffins, followed by four labeled boxes: First, Next, Then, and Last. Students read the story once for enjoyment, read it again with a pencil in hand, and then write one event in each box in their own words. The story deliberately contains no sequence signal words, so children have to follow the order of the narrative itself rather than copy a cue word out of the text.
