About this resource
Description
Sequencing is how young readers figure out the order of steps in a process, and this sequencing graphic organizer worksheet gives 1st graders a clear, friendly way to practice it. Children read a short how-to text about planting a bean seed and pick out the steps that tell what to do, in the order they happen.
The worksheet prints a short informational text in a tinted reading panel beside a colorful picture of a paper cup with a tiny green sprout. Below the text, three labeled boxes (First, Next, and Last) give students plenty of room to write each step in their own words. The text does not use signal words, so children must read carefully and think about what comes before and after. Use it as guided practice, a literacy center, or a quick check after a lesson on how-to writing.
What’s Included
- A 1st grade sequencing worksheet with an original how-to text about planting a seed
- A First, Next, Last graphic organizer with three roomy writing boxes
- A full answer key showing each step in the correct order
How This Worksheet Helps Kids
First, it builds reading comprehension by asking children to find the important steps inside a short informational text. Second, it teaches the language of order (first, next, last) that students will use in their own writing and retelling. Third, it connects reading to a real science activity, so kids see that following steps in order matters in everyday life.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
After students finish, plant real bean seeds together and have children point to the step they are doing. You can also cut the three boxes apart, mix them up, and let students put them back in order. For extra challenge, ask children to write their own how-to steps for brushing teeth or making a sandwich using a blank copy of the organizer.
