Description
Hearing the first and last sound in a word is the doorway into reading, and it is the skill this Short A Words Beginning and Ending Sounds Worksheet is built to practice. A kindergartner who can look at a picture, say the word slowly, and pull off the sound at each end is doing the work that turns letters into words. Short-a words are the best place to start, because the vowel in the middle stays put while the sounds on either side change.
The worksheet gives children three big picture cards. Under each picture sits a row of three sound boxes with the letter a already printed in the middle, so the only job is to listen for the sound at the front of the word and the sound at the end and write those two letters. Use this kindergarten beginning sounds worksheet in a small group, at a literacy center, as morning work, or as a quick check after a short-a lesson. Say each picture name out loud together first, stretching the word so the three sounds separate.

Three things make this Short A Words Beginning and Ending Sounds Worksheet work for young learners. First, the middle vowel is given, so all of the child’s attention goes to the two sounds the lesson is actually about instead of being split three ways. Second, every picture has exactly one name a five-year-old would give it, so no child loses the item because they called the picture something else. Third, the sound boxes are large and clearly separated, which gives beginning writers room to form a letter comfortably and gives you a clean, quick way to see which sound a child is still missing.
Teachers and parents can carry this practice past the page in a few minutes. Say a short-a word and have children clap once for each sound, then say only the first sound, then only the last. Hunt around the room for objects whose names end in the same sound as cat. Write the letter a on a small card, then take turns laying other letter cards on either side of it and reading whatever word comes out, silly ones included. Finish by asking the child to draw a picture of their own short-a word and build its three sound boxes underneath.
