Description
Before a child can read a word, she has to be able to hear it come apart. The first sound and the last sound are the two a young reader notices first, and the vowel sitting between them is the piece that holds the word together. That is exactly the job of this Short E Beginning and Ending Sounds Worksheet: the e is already printed in the middle of every word, so a kindergartner can put all of her attention on the consonant she hears at the start and the consonant she hears at the end. Words like pen, bed and net are short, honest and completely regular, which makes them the safest place to practise this skill.
This kindergarten beginning sounds worksheet gives your child six clay-model pictures, each one sitting above two blank lines with a printed e between them. She says the picture name out loud, stretches it slowly — p…e…n — and then writes the letter she hears first and the letter she hears last. Say the words together the first time through, and let her tap the sounds on her fingers before she picks up a pencil. The lines are wide and the letters are big, so a child who is still forming letters has plenty of room to work. The answer key on page two lets you check all twelve letters in a few seconds.

Keep going after the page is finished. Say a short-e word and have your child build it with letter tiles or magnets, changing only the first sound: pen, ten, hen, men. Go on a short-e hunt around the house and see how many things you can find. Play a quick guessing game in the car — “I am thinking of something that starts with /b/ and ends with /d/, and you sleep in it.” Five minutes of listening games does as much for a kindergartner as another page of writing, and it costs nothing to set up.
