Beginning and ending sounds are the first and last sounds a child hears in a spoken word, and hearing them clearly is what turns guessing into real reading. When a Kindergarten student can say pig and pick out the /p/ at the front and the /g/ at the end, they are ready to blend and spell three-letter words on their own. This short i beginning and ending sounds worksheet gives young readers six familiar pictures and asks them to listen carefully, isolate the two consonant sounds, and write the letter that matches each one. The short i vowel is already printed in the middle of every word, so all of the child’s attention stays on the sounds at the edges.
Every picture on the page names a simple short i word: pig, lid, six, bib, wig, and bin. The child says the picture name out loud, stretches the word slowly, and writes the beginning letter on the first line and the ending letter on the last line. Because the vowel is given, even a brand-new writer can finish a whole word successfully. A second section adds handwriting practice on three-line guides, where the child traces pig, bib, and six and then writes each word again.
