Hearing the first and last sound in a short word is one of the very first steps a young reader takes, and this Short I Words Beginning and Ending Sounds Worksheet gives kindergarten students a calm, uncluttered place to practice it. Each short i word on the page follows the simple consonant-vowel-consonant pattern, so the middle sound is already given and the child can put all of their attention on the two sounds at the edges of the word. Saying a picture name slowly, stretching it out, and catching the sound at the front and the sound at the end is exactly the phonemic awareness work that later spelling and decoding are built on.
This kindergarten beginning sounds worksheet uses six large picture cards: a pig, a bib, a wig, a lid, a fig, and a pin. Under every picture sit two wide writing lines with a printed letter i between them. The student says the picture name out loud, listens for the sound at the start, writes that letter on the first line, then listens for the sound at the end and writes that letter on the second line. The lines are sized for kindergarten handwriting, so there is real room to form each letter. Use it as morning work, as a small-group phonics station, or as a quick check before moving on to blending and reading whole words.
