About this resource
Description
Learning the long o sound is a big step for young readers, and this Long O Worksheet gives second graders focused practice with the two spellings they meet most often. When the letter o says its own name, it can be spelled with the oa team, as in boat and road, or with the silent e pattern, as in home and stone. Sorting those two patterns out is what turns careful sounding-out into smooth, confident reading.
This long o worksheet keeps the practice short and clear so students can concentrate on listening first and spelling second. In Part A, students read four rows of four words and circle the one word in each row that has the long o sound, which trains the ear before the pencil ever moves. In Part B, students copy six words from the word box into the correct column, oa or o_e, with a picture of a boat and a coiled rope modeling each pattern at the top of its column. Print it for a phonics center, morning work, homework, or a quick small-group review, and use the included answer key to check the work in seconds.
What’s Included
- One printable 2nd grade long o worksheet in PDF format
- Part A: four circle-the-long-o-word rows with four choices each
- Part B: a six-word sorting activity for the oa and o_e spelling patterns
- An illustrated example for each spelling pattern
- A complete answer key
This activity helps kids in three ways. First, it separates hearing from spelling, so students prove they can hear the long o before they are asked to write it. Second, it builds a real spelling habit, because sorting words into the oa and o_e columns shows that one sound can be written more than one way. Third, it gives quick and honest feedback, since a teacher can see at a glance which pattern a student still mixes up.
Teachers and parents can stretch this 2nd grade long vowels worksheet in a few easy ways. Read the circled words aloud together and stretch the vowel so the long sound is unmistakable. Ask students to add one word of their own to the bottom of each column. Cover the word box and turn Part B into a spelling dictation. Or send the page home and have a family member listen while the child reads every long o word on the sheet.
